WG, SNSD & Kara – Reasons behind their popularity

385866By Park JaeDuk @ JoyNews (avalo@joynews24.com)

Leading of the rush of idol girl-groups, the Wonder Girls, Girls’ Generation (SNSD), and Kara, have each honestly revealed the contributing factors to their popularity.

Rising up as ‘National Little Sisters’ after their consecutive hits <Tell Me>, <So Hot>, and <Nobody>, the Wonder Girls noted their ‘5 person, 5 colors’ individuality as the leading factor in their popularity. The member’s distinctive personalities are appealing because they correspond to the varying tastes of fans.

The Wonder Girls stated, “If you look at the fans, it seems as though they like one member while disliking four out of five of us. It’s because all five of us have different personalities.”

Moreover, they used anime metaphors to explain, “If you look at ‘Sailor Moon,’ isn’t there always one character you prefer among Sailor Moon, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Venus? Looking at ‘Wedding Peach’ too, you’re bound to like one character more out of Peach, Lily, Daisy. ”

In addition to their ‘5 person, 5 colors’, the Wonder Girls also picked their ‘Non-celebrity-like familiarity’ as their personal charm.

Girls’ Generation, who returned after nine months to sweep both the on and off-line music charts with their comeback, pointed to their bright and wholesome charm as the primary factor in their popularity.

Girls’ Generation offered a rather mature analysis, stating, “It seems like people like the image of girls who look like they’re running around laughing in a thick meadow.” Fans feel happier and gain strength from seeing the members’ individual colors on top of this wholesome and lively charm.

“It’s most impressive when fans say they gained strength during tough times after seeing a Girls’ Generation clip,” stated Girls’ Generation. “They seem to see the bright side out of seeing us genuinely enjoy the work we do.”

On the other hand, Kara, who is quickly coming up with the release of their second mini-album and the title song <Pretty Girl>, selected their ‘team’s quality for looking natural and lively rather than doll-like prettiness’ as a factor in their popularity.

Kara’s hopes for the future were also revealed. “After undergoing a change in members, we increased our recognition with our first mini-album <Rock U>. Now with <Pretty Girl> it seems like we’ve found our own color. We want to be remembered for being natural and lively while being comfortable and easy-going.”

The colors they’ve recently shown on broadcast TV stem from their desire to be seen not as an idol group but as comfortable and easy-going.

The Wonder Girls’ distinct personalities, Girls’ Generation’s bright and wholesome charm, and comfortable and natural Kara—the fascinating battle between the ‘3 shades of charm’ will continue to draw the attention of fans.

WonGirl SunYe involved in hit and run

20090108_sunyecar

Wonder Girl Leader SunYe was involved in a hit and run incident on January 7th. Fortunately for her, she wasn’t in the vehicle at the time, so she wasn’t injured.

OnSe Telecom had scheduled a fan meeting at the Seoul CheongDamDong Art Hole the same day. This incident caused about a 1 hour delay.

A JYP representative said:

SunYe was supposed to come to our management offices in her car. All the Wonder Girls were supposed to meet at the management offices beforehand to go to the fan meeting together. Before she reached the management offices she was briefly parked somewhere to run a quick errand. During this time frame, the hit and run incident occurred while the car was parked. Because of this, she was delayed and couldn’t get to the management offices. We had to have a staff member pick SunYe up. It was our first fan meeting of 2009 and we apologize to the fans who had to wait through the delay.

Comedian Kim Wan Gi had to stall the meeting until the Wonder Girls finally arrived. Thankfully, SunYe wasn’t hurt. You can replace a car but you can’t replace someone as wonderful as SunYe.

In other delay news, The Wonder Girls will be delaying their concert that was scheduled on Valentine’s Day. Instead their concert will be held on March 28th so they can better prepare for it.

Thank god she’s okay. I don’t know what chaos will ensure if anything happened to her. Whoever was responsible for the hit and run, you’ll be having bad luck for the rest of your life.

2009 idol forecast!

crystal_ball1

The idol forecast for 2009 will be bright with new groups, individual activities, concerts and tours.

Super Junior, the 13-member pop group, saw some of its members branching out here and also abroad through smaller “units” like Super Junior-T, Super Junior-Happy, Super Junior-M and Super Junior-K.R.Y, but this year will see all of the members getting together as one whole group.

“We think we show our best performances when we are all working together. We will show everyone what Super Junior has in store this year, all together,” the members said at a recent press conference before their concert scheduled for this month.

The group will release its third album in March. While the members of Super Junior are getting back together, Big Bang is gearing up for solo activities.

The five-member pop group is holding concerts from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1 and will greet fans individually through different projects. Victory, known as Seung-ri here, has started performing solo songs recently.

His song “Strong Baby” was included in the group’s album, and slowly gained popularity day after day, especially after his performance during a music program on major TV network SBS last month. With a music video and album plans, Victory will hopefully prove that he can fly solo.

“Along with Victory, G-Dragon and Tae-yang are also looking at releasing solo albums soon. Dae-sung is also planning to release a trot (Korean traditional pop genre) single, while TOP will continue to work with other singers, including Gummy and Uhm Jung-hwa. Fans will have the chance to witness the various musical skills of the members,” YG Entertainment said.

Fans of Wonder Girls will be thrilled to know that the hit pop group will hold its first concert in February. After the concert, however, the group will move to the United States and carry out their U.S. promotions for the time being.

Nine-member group Girls’ Generation is planning to release its first mini-album called “Gee” Jan. 7. The main track, also titled “Gee,” was written by famed songwriter E-Tribe, the same composer who brought Lee Hyo-ri’s hit number “U-Go Girl.”

Being one of the only girl groups to have sold more than 100,000 albums with their debut work “Girls’ Generation” last year, the group’s next project started a buzz among fans and those working in the pop music industry.

TVXQ, who returned to the pop scene after a two-year hiatus last year with its fourth album, is planning to tour overseas this year. Starting in Korea, the five-member group will take “The Third Asia Tour Concert-Mirotic” to places such as Beijing and Bangkok. The group’s local concert will be held at the Gymnastics Stadium, Olympic Park. TVXQ will also release a single album later this month in Japan. (Han Sang-hee, Staff Reporter, The Korea Times)

DBSK Yunho, WG Yoo Bin & BB Seung Ri – Ex schoolmates?

“It has been disclosed recently that Dong Bang Shin Ki’s U-Know Yun Ho, Wonder Girls’ Yoo Bin, and Big Bang’s Seung Ri all went to Jeong Ahm Elementary School in Weol Gye Dong, Kwang Ju.

The three people coincidentally went to Kwang Ju, their hometown, on January 1st at the same time and were surprised to find out that they went to the same elementary school. U-Know Yun Ho is the oldest, being born in 1986; Yoo Bin is after him, being born in 1988; and Seung Ri is the youngest, being born in 1990.

This isn’t the first time celebrities are drawing popularity by being alumni of the same school, but the fact that a member from each of the three greatest idol groups that are leading the music industry today is alumni of the same school with the others is very unique.

An associate of Seung Ri said, “Seung Ri found out by going to his hometown for New Years that the three artists gathered in one city” and “It is an incredible connection.”

An associate of U-Know Yun Ho also marveled, “I knew U-Know Yun Ho and Seung Ri went to the same school, but it’s surprising that even Yoo Bin went to the same school.”

A close associate of Yoo Bin also said, “I’ve known since last year that the three people are alumni of the same elementary school. It is a surprising coincidence.”

On the other hand, Dong Bang Shin Ki, Big Bang, and Wonder Girls are representing groups from SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment, respectively, that have conquered the biggest awards from the past end-of-the-year music award ceremonies and are demonstrating competitive popularity.”

onion-head31 Wow, this is one very cool fact. Who would’ve guessed these three were in the same elementary school?

Wonder Girls, Wonder Drama?

wonder-girls

JYP (Park Jin Young), CEO and mastermind of one of the greatest record labels in Korea (JYP Entertainment) and Bae Yong Joon (The Drama King), recently revealed plans to start a business venture together. And it seems one of their first projects will be to create a “Wonder Girls Drama” in 2009, for the American market.

JYP had plans to bring the Wonder Girls over to America already, and now he’s teamed up with Drama King Bae Yong Joon, to create and develop a strategy to ease the Wonder Girls into the American market. Their strategy is to create a hit TV series/drama in the U.S., utilizing the Wonder Girls as the main characters, which they hope will allow Americans to overcome Asian stereotypes.  – Source: allkpop.com

Wow, if the drama is really gonna happen, I’m sure it’ll be something to spazz about. I know So Hee has acting experience, but not sure about the rest. For those who doesn’t know, Wonder Girls has their own reality TV show, Wonder Bakery.

korea-wonder-girls-004

In this show, the girls pairs up with aspiring bakers and compete for 10 million won. The show started November last year, so if you haven’t seen it and wanna watch it but doesn’t understand Korean like I do,  WonderSubbers has  done a great job of subbing it. Check it out!
